Process automation vs AI augmentation: how decisions get made
Automation has long promised efficiency through standardisation. AI now promises something more ambiguous: improved judgement, faster sensemaking, and higher-quality decisions. The difficulty is that these promises sit inside real organisations with constraints, risk appetite, legacy processes, and people who need clarity about what is changing and what remains non-negotiable.
Executive summary Most organisations can already automate more than they do, yet AI is shifting attention from repeatable tasks to knowledge work. The choice is rarely either process automation or AI augmentation: it is about where each logic fits, what level of human accountability is required, and how to industrialise safely. Returns can be compelling, but so can hidden costs, from rework to reputational exposure. The remaining uncertainty is not technical performance, but organisational design.
